Types of Hearing Implants:

• Cochlear implants use electrodes inserted into the cochlea of the inner ear to stimulate the auditory nerve. They consist of both internal and external parts. The external components are located behind the ear, where a microphone records sound and transmits it to the inner implant, which then transforms it into electrical signals that are transmitted to the brain.

• Similar to cochlear implants, auditory brainstem implants stimulate the brainstem directly instead of the cochlea. When the auditory nerve is absent or damaged, this type of implant is utilized.

While cochlear and auditory brainstem implants function differently, hearing aids help people with mild to moderate hearing loss by amplifying sound. These implants stimulate the auditory nerve or brainstem directly, avoiding the damaged areas of the ear, rather than just making sounds louder. For people with severe sensorineural hearing loss, where conventional hearing aids are not very helpful, this method may be more successful.
